Samsung Omnia 7 review – Windows Phone 7

Overall conclusions, thoughts and wrap-up

So this is the part where I give my final verdict of the Samsung Omnia 7, the first Windows Phone 7 device I was lucky enough to review. This part of the review is written with the Samsung Omnia 7 between me and the laptop I’m writing on (so I need to be gentle, he’s reading what I write ;-) ).
To be quite fair I can be very gentle about the Samsung Omnia 7. In three words: “I like it”. But to be somewhat more specific about the device, I must admit that I think the Omnia 7 has only one downside, and that is taking pictures when using the flashlight.

The Windows Phone 7 core features are quick but aren’t completely flawless; For example hidden SSID’s cannot be added to your WLAN settings. But from my perspective, that is just a matter of time AND those are issues every Windows Phone 7 device currently shipping faces.  The smoothness and swiftness of the OS is the key to a good user experience and I must admit Windows Phone 7 runs pretty darn quick on the Omnia 7.

What I like a lot about the Omnia 7 is it’s camera. The pictures are really well and the video is even better.

Another great aspect of the Omnia 7 is the placement of all the buttons. I need to take my own experiences as a reference here, your conclusion can be absolutely different. It doesn’t care in which hand I’m holding the Omnia, I can push any button without using my other hand and without making convulsive movements with my hand. So the one-hand usage experience is really well for my kind of hands.

But the best feature of the Samsung Omnia 7 must be it’s screen. This crystal clear Super AMOLED Screen is really amazing. Not only when you’re displaying an 720p video on it, which is almost a jaw-dropping experience, but also when you’re just reading the internet or email, or just flipping through the menu.

Too bad there is no notification LED on the device. Or is there?
From what I’ve read on other reviews was that the audio quality of the external speaker as well as the call quality is pretty good on the Omnia 7.

Can’t wait to give Windows Phone 7 a try!

As far as I’ve seen there’s no Notification LED on the device. At least not one that is clear enough to notice me, while using it the last 2 weeks.

Yes both the external speakers as the sound quality of the ‘normal’ speaker are pretty good in my opinion.

      Thanks for your reply Emiel!

      Hi Jay,

I sometimes have this problem as well, on all three Windows Phone 7 devices available in the Netherlands:

      - Samsung Omnia 7
      - LG Optimus 7
      - HTC 7 Trophy

All three have the camera button in the lower part of the right side ! :)
Question: Where would you place the camera button ? Or do you think a dedicated camera button is obsolete ??
