Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 review – A mobile hotspot in your pocket !

Short Introduction

The Novatel Wireless MiFi received the GSMA Global Mobile Award for Best Mobile Connected Device at Mobile World Congress, as you can read on the Novatel Wireless website:

“Novatel Wireless, a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions, is pleased to announce that its MiFi(TM) Intelligent Mobile Hotspot has won the GSMA Global Mobile Award for Best Mobile Connected Device (non-handset). The GSMA Global Mobile Awards is the mobile industry’s leading annual award presentation that honors excellence and innovation in the mobile communications industry worldwide.”

In this article I would like to have a thorough look at the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352, its hardware and a few different usage scenario’s. Mark Briggeman, Windows Mobile MVP, has used a Novatel Wireless MiFi during his trip to the Global MVP Summit 2010 in Seattle and his experiences are also included as part of this review.

What is in the box ?

The Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 comes in a pretty standard sized box for a mobile device (compared to the box for example the HTC Snap). The box has some excellent graphical styling, and a great realistic picture of the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 which gives you a great idea of the device before you have even opened the box.

In addition to the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 itself you will find  a 1530 mAh battery to power the Novatel Wireless MiFi. Furthermore there is a USB – micro USB cable included to charge the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 via your notebook, or use it as a USB broadband modem.

There is also a wall charger included with multiple plugs. A great compliment for this approach, since the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 seems to be a great product for the traveling mobile professional. Finally there is a quick start guide included, when you need help to get your Novatel Wireless MiFi configured.

Great review, I use the MiFi myself for while now and indeed, the usage possibilities are endless! I only experience a one time failure each time that I want to connect with an iPad. The second time I try however everything is ok again.

      Hi René,

      Thank you for the comment.
Actually I’m a little surprised about the “connection-issue” with the iPad !? Any idea where this could come from …

iPad firmware seems to have a bug. Our clients with iPad sometimes have issues connecting to MiFi configure in WPA2 mode. Merely switching to WPA+WPA2 mixed mode solves the problem. So it does look like an iPad OS bug, since laptops have no problems connecting to the same MiFi at the same time.

Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 (European version) & MiFi 2372 (American version, for AT&T, Bell, Rogers, TELUS, etc) from the official distributor.

Does this work with an ipod touch?

Also do you have to sign up with a carrier for a monthly fee?

      Hi Geo,

I would certainly advice to go for a cellular data subscription, other wise you simply pay per MB which could become very costly. You share your cellular data connection with several devices … so it’s not hard to do the math if you -for example- will be browsing the internet for an hour. Over here in Europe there are pretty cheap flat-free data subscriptions (data-only or combined with voice and sms).
