If you are travelling to the United States or if you live in the United states you realize that Mobile data comes at huge cost. Many get charged international roaming data costs or if you live in the United Sates you get charged overages. In some cases you even have to pay your carrier to turn on the hotspot functionality on your phone just to be able to share your current data plan with other devices. Many have asked me over the years what is the best dataplan to get. Well there is a new player in town. Until now Virgin Mobile  was the first choice I would let people know to Read more

In this article I would like to provide a short overview of Internet Sharing on Windows Phone, one of the area’s in which Microsoft pioneered new functionality for smartphones. It reminds me of an article of international friend Arne Hess, MVP Mobile Devices and Editor in Chief of the::unwired, “How Windows Mobile, Internet Sharing and UMTS saved me time” in which he states: “Okay, I admit that I was quite “frustrated” and “irritated” when Microsoft replaced the dial-up modem functionality on Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU2 with Internet Sharing.” In case you forgot the specific timeframe, Jaap van Ekris, MVP Mobile Devices, has published an overview of Windows Mobile OS versions and updates in time Read more

I want to dedicate this article to an application for Windows Phone that has provided an excellent solution for avoiding roaming costs abroad as the result of “unwanted” cellular data connections that are automatically started by an application. I’m talking about MoDaCo Nodata, which is developed back in 2006 by one of my international friends Paul O’Brien, Founder and Editor in Chief of MoDaCo. In the original release post on the MoDaCo forums Paul O’Brien wrote: “Here’s a quick, handy little application i’ve rustled up as i’m off abroad for a few days soon, and don’t want to run up a huge GPRS bill. It lists your GPRS connections, and allows you to Read more

Having a cabin in the rural area of the Catskills in NY,  I was forced to get satellite internet, since there was no availability of DSL or Cable internet. However with the huge coverage of Verizon’s 3G network I have another option for a broadband connection. Below is a summary of the two connections I have available to me when I did my test.  I am glad I was able to test this. This test has proven to me that even 3G data connection (or 4G and LTE in the future) will be my preferred internet connection over any satellite internet service that is available. A few months ago I reviewed the Wi-Fi Router application on the HTC HD2, which transforms your Windows Phone into a real MiFi !! Despite it is a great application to use on the road, I do miss some (advanced) router- and security functionality. In this article I will put the Huawei B260 3G Gateway to the test, and will have and in-depth look at both the hardware and software of this advanced travel router.  Only be looking at the box, my guess is that this product will be aimed at the more demanding professional who needs advanced routing functionality on the go. Let’s find out if there is some truth in this a-priori guess Read more
