The HTC Vivid 4G LTE phone is the latest LTE phone that launched this week on the AT&T network together with the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. When you hold the HTC Vivid in your hand the first impression will be…wow this is a nice heavy and solid unit. But if you ever had the light weighted Samsung Galaxy S or S II series as your device you might think a little differently.

The Mango update for all existing Windows Phones is getting closer. I can’t wait to update my Samsung Focus to the official Mango update. But now Samsung also announced that they will be launching two new Windows Phone with AT&T.

These two new phones are:

Samsung Focus S

The Samsung Focus™ S builds on the success of the award-winning and highest-selling Windows Phone in the U.S., the Samsung Focus™.

Featuring:

• a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display
• 1.4GHz processor
• 4G-capable speeds

The Samsung Focus S will find its way into a lot of pockets this fall.

• As fast and lightweight as it is compact, it runs a 1.4 GHz processor
• 5-megapixel camera
• plus front facing camera.

Unfortunately we don’t have any more specifications, images  and dates yet from Samsung or AT&T.

Additionally, the Samsung Focus will receive the Windows Mango update this Fall.

AT&T announced that it will carry the HTC Titan as the new Windows Phone as well.

AT&T just launched it big campaign letting consumer know that their 4G network is the fastest and most reliable. The HTC Inspire 4gis their first phone promoted to their customers on the 4G network that also will have a build-in WiFi Hotspot application.

Since the loss of the exclusivity of the Apple iPhone AT&Tis working hard on giving their customers extra value. There was a promotion for an extra 1000 roll over minutes, some iPhone customers were allowed to switch back to the unlimited data plan again. And the upcoming iPhone 4 update would have the Wifi Hotspot application accessible. But you don’t have to wait for this because the HTC Inspire 4G has 4G data speeds capability and the WiFi Hotspot build-in already.

Other features on the HTC Inspire 4G included are: Entertainment HQ, HTC Sense, Built-in DLNA allows you to stream from your phone to your flat-screen, In-camera editing, and much more.

We received from Samsung the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S Phone the Samsung Captivate. The Samsung Galaxy S will be available in the rest of the world as the Galaxy S and in the United States with AT&T as the Samsung Captivate, T-Mobile as the Samsung Vibrant, Verizon as the Samsung Facinate and with Sprint as the Samsung Epic 4G.

All the Samsung Galaxy S devices have different look and features. The CDMA devices (Verizon and Sprint) have a slide out landscape keyboard for example.

Out of the Box

My first impression out of the box was the sleek design and the total black screen while the device is turned off or in sleep mode. With other phone you still can see the different black color of the device and the screen, but with the Samsung Captivate it is a nice real black color. However while you are working on your device the 4 home buttons light up for a while but the back light will disappear until you touch one of these buttons again. Being so black you have to look really good which button you want to touch. Compared to the other phones below this device is much lighter.

When turning on the device you can see that the Super AMOLED 4 inch touchscreen is very vibrant in colors. Definitely Eye Candy.

On the front of the device you have the following buttons which are the standard  with all the Google Android Phones. The Samsung Captivate runs on the Google Android Platform 2.1.

These buttons are the from left to right: – Menu – Home -Back – Search

The following buttons and functions are located on the rest of the phone.

On the Top part of the Samsung Captivate you have the 3.5 mm headphone port and the Micro USB connector port that is covered with a sliding cover. Really cool.

On the right side of the device while looking at it you have only power button which allows you to turn on and off your phone with a long press of the button, while turning off  with the long press you actually get two other options besides power off: Silent Mode and Flight Mode. The Short press of the power button turn on or off your screen to conserve battery power.

On the left side of the device while facing the front you will have your volume control. You can press up or down to control your volume output.

The bottom of the device you will see a pinhole which is your microphone.

And on the back side of your phone you have your battery cover and 5 Megapixel camera lens.

Under battery cover is the space for of course your 1500 mAh Battery, sim card and your micro sd card to expand your memory. The battery cover opens up by actually sliding down the piece below the battery cover.

User Experience

The video below gives you a good indication how I feel about this amazing Samsung Galaxy S Device. The colors are so vibrant. The added Samsung Widgets are really useful.  Samsung always had great camera’s on their devices and this one is no exception.

The slide to unlock feature on the lock screen is very handy for everyone You can slide the screen in almost any direction to unlock your phone. Another great feature is the slide motion on a contact to quickly text or call that contact.

The Notification Bar has standard build in the most important connectivity quick buttons like WiFi, Bluetooth Silent and Vibration Profile. (see video)

The standard keyboard has a great accuracy and touch feedback. You can switch keyboards and get the great Swype keyboard as well.

The phone has seven home screens and are very customizable. The middle home screen has four fixed icons on the bottom:  -Phone- Corporate E-mail – Browser -Applications. I still have to see if you can change fixed icons around.

Conclusion

Samsung did a great job with the Galaxy S device.  The Super AMOLED 4 inch screen is eye candy. The User Interface is attractive and the added functionalities of the Samsung widgets makes it even more so attractive. The device is bigger compared to the Apple iPhone 4 but is lighter in your pockets. My only negative point as I pointed out in the video is the that the reaction of switching screen is slow using the buttons on the front of the device. The touch feedback is fast, but a delay in visual.

We haven’t seen any official pricing or release date yet on the Samsung Captivate but you can sign up to receive updates from AT&T here. But it looks like the phone will cost $199.99 with a 2 year contract and a minimum $15 data plan.

The HTC Aria is the first HTC Google Android device with AT&T.  The HTC Aria is now available at the AT&T stores. In the online store there is an extra $100 discount which brings the price down to $129.99 with a 2 year contract.

If you look at new line of HTC Google Android devices like the HTC Droid Incredible from Verizon, HTC Desire and the HTC Legend, you will come across the same user interface. “The HTC Sense“. The latest version allows you to have 7 home screens and adds pinch zoom on the home screen to navigate between the 7  different home screens and the pinch zoom will work in the picture application as well.

In the video below I will show you the device up close. In general all the HTC Google Android devices have the same user experience, however the smaller size of the HTC Aria with still a big screen estate makes the HTC Aria a very attractive device.

This is already part 5 in our review series of the LG eXpo. In the video below I will be going over the add-on Pico Mobile Projector. It will connect very easily to the back of the LG eXpo by replacing the battery cover with the Mobile Projector.
The Projector is powered by the battery of the device. Once you open the slider of the lens it will activate the power to the projector. A screen pops up on your device explaining with not to many words how it works. Yes, that easy, One more slider on the projector will get you your picture in focus and the camera button on your device will make you switch between landscape and portrait mode.

Our earlier video’s of the LG eXpo from AT&T reviews we had some questions about the speed of the fingerprint scanner and the Internet Explorer application.  In this video I show you how both these work very well. Yes the internet speed can always go faster. I probably will install the Opera browser on this phone since I like this better compared to the Internet Explorer the Windows Phone comes with.

I have also addressed the question about the 3.5 mm headphone adapter. The LG eXpo comes with a headset where you can remove the earphones from the microphone section and connect your own favorite earphones to the microphone. This will give you the headset with your own earphones.

Garmin just released the Garmin Nuvifone G60 with AT&T.  This device was designed to be a navigation system in the first place, but with added features like most phones have as well.

The User Interface is very simple and very easy to use. The three large on screen buttons are for the main functions like : Call, Search and Show maps.

The build in GPS and the 3G connectivity will give this device the live capabilities to find addresses and Point of Interests online and instantly use this information to navigate to this address.

The cradle is really designed to use the device in a horizontal/landscape position. It comes with a suction cup and

cradle that allows you to place this onto your windshield or onto a round disk that you can adhere anywhere on your dashboard.

The Garmin Nuvifone can connect to the computer using the USB sync cable. Windows will recognize this as a Mass storage device. After the USB driver is installed you will be able to see the device in “My Computer”.  By selecting the device it redirects you to install a dashboard application from Garmin which allows you to manage your device on your computer.

In the last couple of years many different frequencies have been added to the confusion of the worldwide GSM (2G/Edge) and High Speed Data Networks (3G,HSDPA,UMTS) on cellular phones. Since we all love  to have the newest gadgets we would like to be one of the first. In the Windows Phone forums, where I moderate, many questions arise why my phone bought overseas is not connecting to the high speed data service in a specific country. Hopefully I will be able to guide you below to the answer and give you the specifics before you purchase your next Unlocked Phone to use at home or world wide.

Well, many mobile devices are specially engineered for the different markets around the world. For example the HTC Touch Pro and the HTC Fuze are exactly the same device, however the build in radio’s for the 3G / HSDPA data network are different. When you travel overseas you can loose this high speed data signal and fall back on the Edge/GSM/GPRS/ 2G network.  Many people like to purchase an unlocked phone overseas and bring it back to their home country and then they realize that the 3G / HSDPA radio’s build into the device are not supported.

Why high speed data?  The mobile phones these day are more like small personal computers. They are more and more being used now for streaming media content (Internet radio and TV), Internet browsing, etc. over the high speed data networks. You even see that other non-phone mobile devices will have 3G build in to give the device the opportunity to download information at high speeds when needed. For example the Kindle 2 and DX from Amazon and many Netbooks are sold now through the mobile phone service providers with the High Speed 3G / HSDPA data connection.

Many phones these days are called “World Phones”. These phone most likely will support the High Speed Data Networks (3G,HSDPA,UMTS) world wide. However I would still look at the specifications of these phones before you purchase and balance them to the network frequencies in the area you live.

The GSM (2G/Edge) frequencies are often called Quad Band Phones. Most phones will work worldwide using these 4 frequencies for making calls and limited data connection. These frequencies are:

GSM, 2G, GPRS,Edge network frequencies (Quad Band)

• 850 MHz   (mostly North America)
• 900 MHz   (mostly Europe, Asia, Australia & Brazil)
• 1800MHz  (mostly Europe, Asia, Australia & Brazil)
• 1900 MHz  (mostly North America)

Below is a small table giving you the frequencies in High Speed Data Networks (3G,HSDPA,UMTS) with their known regions that these frequencies will work. Use this to make sure the phone you will purchase will work with the high speed data frequency connections you need. Please note that you need a data subscription with your mobile provider carrier before you can have data on your device.

• 850 MHz      (United States AT&T)
• 900 MHz
• 1700 MHz    (United States T-Mobile)
• 1900 MHz    (United States AT&T)
• 2100 MHz    (Europe)

There are many other resources online to see which frequencies you have in your area. These tools will allow you to make an educated decision which unlocked phone and where you would like to purchase it from and if it will provide the services you want to have in your part of the world.

I was lucky last week to get my hands on the Samsung Propel Pro by AT&T last week. I mentioned in my other reviews that I still prefer the Non-Touch Windows Smart Phones over the Touchversions.  I really still like my Motorola Q9h a lot due to the form factor and feel of the keyboard and of course being a world phone. (HSDPA/3G across the globe).

The latest Windows non-Touch Phones that were released in recent months are the :

• Pantech Matrix Pro 
• Samsung Jack
• HTC Snap
• and The Samsung Propel

Below is my quick video and my impressions on the Samsung Propel Pro. ( I am working on a new camera with better close-up  focus. The Flip HD isn’t doing it).

All in all, I really like the slider function and the increased screen estate. The Samsung Propel Pro would definitely be a device I would carry around.

Any suggestions on a camera that would improve my picture ?

The Gogo iPhone 3G cases seemed very attractive to me when I saw them through one of the Facebook ads.

I contacted Gogo and asked them for some review samples of the Gradient, Handpainted and Royal series. They all looked appealing to me due to the snap on and slim looks of the cases.

I have to say I am not disappointed at all. The looks and the feel of the cases are great. As they proclaim the cases snap on, are slip free, scratch proof and the royal series are soft to the touch.

I had my worries for the hand painted version I received. The butterfly is hand painted onto the case and you can feel the raised paint on the case. I thought this would get scratched very easy . My wife has been using this case with pride and loves showing of the design and the craftsmanship to her friends. The case really adds some flare to the iPhone. The hand painted butterfly shows no scratches on the paint after extended time of use.

All the three cases don’t add much weight or volume at all and gives it a good feel in your hands.

Of all the cases I have tried and used ,the Gogo case is now my case of preference.

The Gogo cases are priced between $24.99 and $29.99. If you want more then one case they sell them in bundles as well.  Bundles are priced between $29.99 and $34.99, and that is a great deal.

AT&T just passed us on a message of two ROM upgrades for the HTC FUZE and the LG Incite. The HTC FUZE has been reported on some other blogs as well but the LG Incite ROM upgrade is fairly new.

Last week we received the new AT&T Samsung Jack Windows Mobile 6.1 device. My previous article has a quick unbox-video to see what is in the box. It is currently only available through AT&T for $99 with a two year contract and a $100 rebate.

Below is my review video with my impressions of the new AT&T Samsung Jack .

A couple of great features I forgot to mention in the video are listed here:

• Quick dedicated access buttons for GPS, Silent Profile, Camera, and Mail
• Extra Camera features like Smile Shot and Mosaic Shot
• Tap and hold the home button will bring up your task manager.

If you are ready for an upgrade with AT&T and you don’t have a Windows Mobile Device yet, I would highly recommend this AT&T Samsung Jack at a current price of  $99 with a two year contract and a $100 rebate. According to Samsung this device will be upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when it comes out. However the upgrade has to come from the provider. In this case this is AT&T.
